WHITE DEW*
by Xi She

The next climate phase is pushing hard——
the weather turns cold as we speak.
To work up a sweat,
one must ride a good many miles,
choose a route with bridges and uphill terrain,
and welcome the head winds,
and even walk a section on the way back.

Before, you could not buy coolness for a fortune;
come White Dew, and cool becomes too much——
the setting sun drops like a horse shoe;
once it dips into the cold water of Xiao Mao Harbor,
it will be tempered and become thin and sharp.

In the distance, the high-speed train seems sharper even,
like a paper knife, slicing through the thin veil of twilight.
Penetrating, brittle,
impatient, unlike the ones in summer——
the summer that was once so long and drawn out.

Crossing the river now is a flock of birds,
looking like confetti cast in the wind ——
Coolness is not purely in a touch.
Along a stretch of the breakwater,
an empty fishnet left standing is sifting time
into diamond shapes of sapphire blue.

Note:
*White Dew is an interval of the Chinese solar cycle which begins around early September.

Persimmon
by Xi She

The decorum of treating the tongue to an autumn fruit
is sucking, not biting and chewing,

such as a persimmon, a great drop of honey on a bald branch,
swelling with what autumn can provide,
pure sweetness and an overt temptation.

It accepts your sucking, but refuses humiliation
——no wanton pinching or squeezing with lewd puns,
which, to the one in the autumn wind,
the persimmon that has nothing other than purity and sweetness,
is considered an almost unforgivable malice;

the leering eyes of false flattering glances
are not what a persimmon wants.

Almost bursting with sweetness, you adore
its voluptuousness with a heartfelt sip.
Even a sparrow's pecking
will help it realize itself, reciprocating
the goodness of the sun, the moon, heaven and earth.

The Impression: A Moment Trance under the Planetree in Huaihai Park
Text by Xi She    Translated by Translator

The central of the city in the afternoon sunshine. The sudden warmer temperature in the late autumn.
The towering planetree and the fallen leaves. The dry rubbing on the cement ground occurs frequently

The long log chair. The stupefied old ladies

And the loudly chatting old ladies. The sunshine is smearing on their faces
Uneven colors, the comparison of light and darkness is so sharp

The expressions, solitary or lively, are respectively so vivid, cannot be imagined

A few feet apart, the black statue, its joints and the organs shining the copper luster
The colors of autumn stay not a little while on them

But flow to the streets in a bold rhythm. The scene seems full of noisy movements, slow or quick

A little while trance: the rush stops suddenly, and so the noise
The autumn colors are copied and reflected in the show windows and on the glass walls
Across the street, forming a vertical and unfathomable scenic depth

The beauty of the city stands so high not to arrive under the radiant sunshine
Easily, the poet murmurs, floating across the city
But the hair on the temples of lovers, arm in arm, strokes the autumn colors on the wide and remote fields
……

Birdsong At Start of Spring
by Xi She

Plum flowers are thirty-percent open, and the rain is suspended.
The natural wake-up call for me
is a burst of birdsong.

There is no better way to wake up naturally—
Birdsong works like a thawing creek, revealing only the sound,
but not itself.

Approaching, receding.
Receding, approaching.
In-between two rapid birdsongs

is a crystalline pond of silence.
When I open the window a crack,
the two newest birdsongs come in, brisk but also

shivery —
Spring, in my understanding,
starts with birdsong that cold-washes the face.

A World of Fresh and Green
by Xi She

A year ago today, the begonias at the cemetery were one-third blooming,
this year, all have withered.

“Cold spring last year, warmer this year," people easily
explain the immanent reason.

Old sayings can’t be wrong —
The seasons turn, fresh green* returns, the diehard flower.
But people change: new graves crop up by old graves,
perhaps new regrets grow on old regrets?

Women wail a familiar wail, but when they weep,
you may catch something new in their sobs.

Something else is constant: People come and go,
water ebbs and flows, and the misty river whisks by the graveyard,
still so broad, still so nubilous
and refreshing. The river flows quietly, not looking to

distract those lighting incense or those in communion
with the souls on the other shore. Now and then

people lift their heads from the age-old ritual,
and many will cast a glance across the river.

The riparian marsh looks refreshingly green in the sun —
it is exactly this world of fresh and green

that revives our spirits: swallows clip the glittery water
as chock-full barges chug along, up and down the river.

Translator’s note:* Fresh Green: One of the 24 Solar Terms in the Chinese farmers’ Almanac, starting on the fifteen day after Spring Equinox, usually around April 5th. Traditionally April 5th is the day families tend and freshen up their ancestral graves.
